A burn care course for healthcare workers

This course is for healthcare professionals who care for patients with burn injuries. It is designed to strengthen your teamwork and help you understand each other’s roles in supporting burn patients’ needs. All healthcare workers who are members of a team treating burn patients, such as registered nurses, clinical officers and doctors, are welcome to join the course.

This course looks at burn care from a global perspective – the principles of the treatment of burns are the same, wherever you are. The course provides alternative options for providing high-quality care if resources are limited, to ensure these global standards can be applied around the world.

Interactive sessions on burn wound prevention, initial evaluation and management of burn injuries, and assessment of burn wounds
Conservative burn wound treatment
The basics of surgical burn wound treatment
Skills workshop on skin grafting and graft expansion

Introduction in the principles of burns scar contracture release
This course features more than 30 case examples, including patient stories from Tanzania, the Netherlands, Sierra Leone and Bangladesh.

Learn from burn care specialists

Burn care experts from around the world – including doctors, surgeons, nurses, plastic surgeons and physiotherapists from high-income settings and resource-limited settings – contributed to developing this course, so you’ll learn proven techniques that work in your context.

The course instructors are burn specialists, including nurses, clinical officers, surgeons and plastic surgeons. All instructors are selected by local authorities or organizations. The course is approved by the Dutch Burn Foundation, Interplast Holland, and Doctors of the World, Netherlands.

A sustainable and customizable training model for missions organizations

Surgical missions organizations, such as Interplast, Resurge, Doctors of the World, Friendship, Mercy ships, can use this course as a tool to move from the short-term surgical care provision model to a more sustainable model focused on knowledge exchange. This can save money and human resources.

Surgical societies worldwide can embed the course in new and existing training programs and provide an effective and inexpensive element for Continuous Medical Education (the ATLS course is an example of this).
